I wanted to share a poem that has inspired me through the difficult times. It has a powerful message, it acts as a reminder that this journey we call life is our journey. Nobody else can live our life just as we can not live anybody else’s.
The Journey by Mary Oliver
One day you finally knew
what you had to do, and began,
though the voices around
kept shouting their bad advice
though the whole house
began to tremble and
you felt the old rug at your ankles.
“Mend my life!”
each voice cried.
But you didn’t stop.
You knew what you had to do,
though the wind pried with it’s stiff fingers
at the very foundations
though their melancholy was terrible.
It was already late enough and a wild night,
and the road full of broken branches and stones.
But little by little,
as you left their voices behind
the stars began to burn
through the sheets of clouds,
and there was a new voice
which you slowly recognised as your own,
that kept you company as you strode deeper and deeper into the world,
determined to do the only thing you could do
determined to save the only life you could save.
Determined to save the only life you could save – Yours
When I first read this poem it hit hard because it made me realise how I had drowned out my own voice, my inner voice so that I could pay attention all the other voices. The one’s that give you advice based on their own experiences, their own fears and insecurities. Sometimes with good intentions, sometimes not.
If you are a little different, if you want something different, then you will hear many voices trying to get you back on track, to make sure you don’t stray from the general consensus.
Doing something different and daring to follow your own path can make some people feel uncomfortable because you are showing them that it is possible to follow your dream, do what you need to do and go beyond the safe. It’s easier for others to make you feel like you are the one that’s crazy or wrong than it is for them to accept that you have your own journey.
This Journey is Yours and Only Yours
The only thing you can do is listen to your voice, drown out the other voices and take this journey of life with courage. Then and only then can you really be true to you and live the amazing life you deserve.
